Stages of Change- Cigarettes


Quitting a habit like smoking can feel overwhelming. You may want to change, but also feel unsure, stuck, or discouraged. This is a very normal experience. Change is not a straight line—it is a process with different stages, and each one matters.


A Process, Not a Quick Fix

When it comes to changing habits like smoking, people often move through these stages:

1. Precontemplation (Not ready)“I’m fine. Why bother quitting?”


2. Contemplation (Thinking about it)“It would be nice to stop… but I’m not sure.”


3. Preparation (Getting ready)“I’ll talk to someone and make a plan.”


4. Action (Taking steps)“I haven’t smoked this week. I’m trying.”


5. Relapse (Slipping back)“I had a cigarette today.”


6. Maintenance (Continuing forward)“I’m staying on track and taking care of myself.”


Each stage is part of the journey—not a failure.

Setbacks are common. They do not erase your progress. You can always return to the process and continue moving forward.
