Building Healthy Habits, One Step at a Time

Starting an exercise routine can feel challenging. You may want to be more active, but also feel tired, busy, or unsure where to begin. That does not mean you lack motivation—it means you are in the process of change.

A Process, Not a Quick Fix

When it comes to exercise, people often move through these stages:

1. Precontemplation (Not ready) “I don’t have the time or energy to exercise.”

2. Contemplation (Thinking about it) “Maybe I should start exercising more.”

3. Preparation (Getting ready) “I’ll make a plan and ask someone to join me.”

4. Action (Taking steps) “I exercised a few times this week.”

5. Relapse (Slipping back) “I haven’t exercised in a few days.”

6. Maintenance (Continuing forward) “I’ve been consistent, and I feel proud.”

Each stage is part of the journey—not a failure.

A Gentle Reminder

Missing a few days does not erase your progress. You can always begin again, right where you are.

The infographic below shows how change can look when building an exercise habit. Notice how thoughts and feelings shift at each stage.

Reflection

  • Where am I right now in this process?

  • What is one small step I can take today?

Consistency grows from small, realistic steps.
