“This Too Shall Pass”

Finding Peace Through Change

There is an ancient story about a king whose emotions rose and fell constantly. A small problem could ruin his entire day. A small success could make him feel on top of the world. He felt controlled by whatever was happening around him, and he longed for peace.

He asked a wise man for something that would help him stay calm and balanced, no matter what happened.

Weeks later, the wise man returned and gave him a simple ring. Carved into it were four words:

“This too shall pass.”

Why These Words Matter

Everything in life is temporary.

Happiness comes and goes.Stress comes and goes.Success comes and goes. Pain comes and goes.

Feelings are like weather. Some days are sunny. Some days are stormy. But no storm lasts forever.

When we remember this, difficult moments feel less permanent. And even joyful moments feel more meaningful.

Everyday Examples

You’re having a stressful week at work. Remind yourself: This too shall pass.

Your child is going through a difficult phase. Remind yourself: This too shall pass.

You feel overwhelmed, discouraged, or tired. Remind yourself: This too shall pass.

Even hard seasons eventually change.

Sometimes the situation improves. Sometimes you grow stronger. Often, both happen.

A Gentle Analogy

Life is like the ocean.

Waves rise. Waves fall. Some are calm. Some are rough.

But the waves never stay forever.

And beneath the surface, the ocean remains steady.

In the same way, your emotions may rise and fall—but your strength remains.

A Simple Practice

When you feel overwhelmed, pause.

Place your hand on your heart.Take a slow breath. Quietly say to yourself:

“This too shall pass.”

These words remind your nervous system to soften. They remind your mind that no feeling is permanent.

Sometimes, peace begins with remembering that change is always coming.
